Saving Flower Seeds

This You Tube video will show you how to save the seeds from your flowers. Most people don't even think about the seeds. I am notorious for picking dried flower heads and sticking them in my pocket. No harm to the plant, most times the plant will produce more flowers for every one you take off.

Step 1     find dry flower head
Step 2     carefully remove dried flower head by gently holding head and pull it off.
Step 3     spread seeds out to dry
Step 4     air dry seeds
Step 5     store seeds in paper bag or envelop for next year
                OR reseed your garden now

Paper Wasp in Garden

I took some time to look up yellow jacket, on line and found that I really have a paper wasp invasion. No not really an invasion, but an organic bug controller. Been watching for nests and the best I can see is they come to eat and fly away from my yard. So, they are quite beneficial to controlling bugs that eat plants like moths.

For now I am giving them their space to do the work in the garden. Keeping a close watch for nests and growing population of wasps. I do not like to get stung but I love the worker wasps taking care of the garden business.

identification: Yellow and black wasps that are usually called yellow jackets. When wings are at rest, they are folded and held out to the side rather than folded over the back like other wasps. Nests are papery, slightly rounded, 4 inches or greater in diameter; they hang upside down.
biology and life cycle: Social insects living with queens, males, and sterile female workers. Overwintered and mated females start nests in the spring in a sheltered place. Cells of a paperlike substance are built from a single connection to a structure or plant in a shady location. Several females may work together. One egg is laid in each cell. Larvae hatch and are fed chewed-up insects and spiders. When ready to pupate, they spin silk caps to close off the cells. Queens lay fertilized eggs that become females. Fertilized female larvae (new queens) are fed a special diet and are the only ones to survive the winter. They are the last batch of females to hatch in the fall. All others, males and females, die. Surviving queens hibernate in dense foliage such as dead palm leaves or in rubbish or old squirrel nests.
habitat: Sheltered spots under the eaves and overhangs of buildings. Also in barns, chicken houses, and other outbuildings. Adults feed on flower nectar or fruit that has been bird-pecked.
feeding habits: Wasp larvae are carnivorous and are fed moth and butterfly larvae that are chewed up by the adult wasp workers.
economic importance: Control of several troublesome caterpillars of moths and butterflies.
natural control: Spiders. Splash water on nest to knock wasps off, then move nest to higher but similar location in the shade. Don't try this if you're allergic to wasp stings or if you are chicken!

organic control: Soapy water or citrus oil products if the nest is in a problem area. Do this only as a last resort--these insects are very beneficial.

insight: Texas yellowjackets are similar but live in nests in the ground and are more aggressive. The wasp's most serious enemies are humans with aerosol spray cans.

I find that the soapy water helps control all bugs. Dried egg shells crushed in the garden keeps slugs and snails away.

Mini Green house dome kit

Once again someone has sent me a comment on Mirical Grow and the connection to GMO.

I hope that we can always learn and not tear others down for their strong beliefs. Thank you for Reading.

to me
magnoliaearth (http://magnoliaearth.com/) has left a new comment on your post "Miracle-Gro Gro-ables up date":

For someone who is touting sustainability and organic living I am appalled that you are promoting any miracle grow product. If living responsibility is important for you, do some research. These products are bad for the environment, animals, and humans. They are not available in CA because thus far that is the only state standing up to Monsanto.

Any credibility you may have had with me is gone. Go ahead, plant them. You won't be able to plant anything else. You will be eating their GMO seeds, and yes, they do contain herbicides and pesticides. Why do you think they are genetically modifying things in the first place? To make them invincible and to make their products the only thing left to use. The problem - there are weeds not becoming resistant as well - when there is a weed that cannot be killed it becomes invasive and ruins the natural balance, can cause the extinction of other species, and can cause animals and insects native to the area to be unable to get the nourishment they need.

These are banned in 22 countries and the whole EU.

To each person their own which is their right in life. I am happy you feel so strongly about this. It shows there are people out there with standards and education to know the truth. I am sharing information and am always happy to pass information on. Unfortunately I do not find threats and anger comments helpful to any one. I am replying to this anger comment only to allow people to understand where I am coming from. Negative energy and vicious comments are not making me feel bad. So, what do you hope to achieve by reading my blog and posting mean nasty comments. Why dont you ask the questions. Why would i post this kids mirical growable kit. For most kids they have no patients to understand what it takes to see a seed grow. I believe this little green dom is a great way to experience the process  in a relatively simple process. It is all self contained and anyone can do the steps and see a seed grow. Do I think that this little dome can provide a step in education yes. Do I think it is going to provide a food source no. Every one has to start some place. My personal garden is grown from my own organic seed. Started in jiffy pots in the house. If you have been fallowing my blog and had some sort of admiration for it I would think that you read this before. Also I have posted information on this problem of GMO and the connection with Mirical Grow. You must have so much information to pass on to others because you feel so strongly about this. Please feel free to forward your own blog sit information. How are you sharing education and the realities of the world we are living in? I am sure there are many of us amateurs out there who would like to know what you have to share.
Looking to a positive solution to the problems of the world are on going. Negativity drags us down and backwards. Moving forward is going to take one step at a time. May nature and earth be on our side.

New tomato's Garden update May 3 2013

 Garden update

My apology to all, about not being on for a while. I was not feeling good and had lots to do just like any one else.

Checking the plants every day for growth and bugs. I knew when I saw yellow jackets buzzing around to keep a close eye on the leaves for bugs. I could be wrong about the yellow jackets, but I did find bugs. I mixed my castle natural soap with water in a spray bottle and carefully sprayed pants every night. Looking for bugs and plucking them off. Of course I also sprayed the plants down in the morning washing the bugs away.

Baby Tomato's can you see them.

The purple is yarn tied to a stake and carefully rapped around the main  plant for support.

I have more photo's of the garden to show you but for some reason I am unable to load them right now.

Thank you for reading. Hang in there I have more to share.
